Friday was basically the spring sports kickoff for Longwood with a lot of action on the south end of campus.
Baseball (1-0): The Lancers won their opening game against the Iona Gaels (0-1) 8-2 at Buddy Bolding Stadium. Kyler Morgan (1-0) went five innings for the Lancers picking up the win. Morgan gave up five hits, two earned runs while striking out 3 Gaels and only surrendering one walk. Aaron Myers and Ryan Schubert closed the door for the rest of the game with both contributing two shutout innings. Eddie Macaluso picked up the loss for the Gaels. Offensively the Lancer were lead by Matt Dickason and Robbie Newman. Dickason two hits and two RBI, while Newman registered four runs on three hits.
Due to the threat of inclement weather Sunday the Lancers will face Iona in a double-header today at noon.
Softball (5-1): Fresh of winning the Georgia State Classic the Lancers opened up their home schedule with a double-header against UMBC. The Lancers swept the Retrievers winning 9-0, 9-8. Jordan Cox continued a stellar junior year and now has five home-runs and eleven RBI on the year. Brooke Short (2-0) picked up the win in game one striking out six Retrievers. Libby Morris (3-1) picked up the win in the second game despite a rough outing, Short came in to get the save.
Today Kathy Riley’s squad will play two more games in Farmville taking on Big East opponents St. John’s and Seton Hall.
Men’s Tennis (0-5): The men’s tennis squad continued to struggle losing to Big South opponent Coastal Carolina 7-0. Both men’s and women’s tennis will stay in Conway, SC today to take on the University of Richmond.
