Lancers’ Women’s Soccer player, Lindsey Ottavio, is the first Longwood student-athlete to be named a Big South Player of the Week. The Senior Captain has been named the Big South Conference/Choice Hotel Women’s Soccer Attacking Player of the Week. Ottavio won the honor because of her two goal performance in a win over the Richmond Spiders 2-1 in Double Overtime on Friday Night. She was also named the College Sports Madness Big South Player of the Week!

Longwood is now 3-1 on the pitch after recently defeating both Richmond and Howard University. The Lancers will next play on Sunday as they travel to Southern Conference member Appalachian State.

The Mens Soccer team traveled to  Conway to open up Big South play and take on the nation’s seventeenth ranked team Coastal Carolina. The Lancers fell 4-0 in a sloppy game in the rain. In Field Hockey the Lancers lost a pair of tight games, losing to St. Francis (PA) 3-1 on Saturday and to Lock Haven 2-1 on Sunday.

Longwood Athletic Director has named Elaine Jones as the new head Womens Lacrosse Coach for the Lancers. Jones comes to Longwood from UC-Davis where she was also the head coach. Last year, Jones lead the Aggies to a 10-5 mark and in 2010 her squad was awarded as the most improved team on the Division I level. Jones is coming home in a way as the Baltimore native was an All-American and a National Champion playing at the University of Virginia in the early 90s. She also has a Masters degree from UMass and a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law. In terms of coaching, Jones was an assistant at UMass from 1993-95 and the head coach of the club team at Southern Cal from 1998-2001.

Lacrosse is historically one of Longwood’s best programs, but the team had a rough year going 4-13 in 2012. Jones will look to improve the 2013 squad as the Big South goes into its inaugural season as a Lacrosse conference and has obtained an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Big South Lacrosse will include eight team including: Longwood, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian, and Winthrop.

Welcome to LU Coach Jones!
