Longwood looks to ride some positive momentum from their win against Winthrop Saturday night for a crucial three game home-stand that begins Wendnesday night against High Point. The Lancers will certainly have an uphill climb with High Point sporting the conference’s best front court and coming off a 28 point win against Longwood two weeks ago.
John Brown and Allan Chaney dominated that 88-60 win two weeks ago combining for 33 points and 11 boards. We’ve touched on Chaney’s story before and his heart problems, but John Brown may be turning out to be the better story at this point in the season. Brown, a freshman, may be the conference’s most athletic player and is now averaging 17 points and 6 rebounds per game. Brown’s performance has helped launch the Panthers to an 8-3 conference mark and a four game win streak.
Two things Longwood may have the advantage on Wednesday night may be guard play and the Panthers on the road. High Point is just 3-7 this year on the road and a good turnout from the Willett faithful could help spur the Lancers along. In terms of guard play, Lucas Woodhouse continues to perform at a high level in running the offense with the mysterious absence of Nik Brown (which has been diagnosed as vertigo). Woodhouse hit a big three to ice the game at Winthrop and also managed 7 assists. The freshman is now averaging nearly 8 assists per game in Brown’s absence.
Two areas of concern for Longwood could be their lack of depth, only six Lancers played on Saturday, and their 2-3 defense. Mike Gillian will likely try to pack the paint against High Point’s talented front court, but Longwood was exposed last week when DJ Covington dominated the zone.
This game could catapult Longwood to a fun finish. Come on out to Willett tomorrow night to root on the Lancers!

I love the breakdown. I think you are spot on. High Point is very athletic inside, but I hope the coaches learned somethings from the last meeting. Let our guard play dictate the tempo. I will be watching! Congrats for a great win at Winthrop!
Yea it will be interesting. The rest of the way, with the exception of UT-Martin, we’ll be facing teams we’ve seen before so how both we and the opposing teams adjust will be interesting. High Point’s guard play is their glaring weakness but Brown/Chaney can hide that. We can’t be the run and gun team of the past, Woodhouse needs to set the tempo and keeps growing more confident every week. I think the next step needs to be for him to start calling his own plays. He’s a special player and can be a team leader. This home-stand is a chance for some young guys to step up and be a leader.
