Now is the time of year that bits and pieces of the 2013-14 basketball schedule start to trickle out. So far we know the Big South opponents who will come to Farmville and who we’ll play on the road, along with a return game with Tennessee-Martin from last year’s Bracketbusters. The first bit of substantial news has now come out via multiple outlets. Longwood will take part in the second ever Barclays Center Classic this November.
This is an evolving event and not much is known in terms of scheduling. Last year’s event featured five teams, Kentucky, Maryland, Morehead State, Lafayette, and LIU Brooklyn, with all five teams playing a round robin format with two showcase games at the Brooklyn based Barclays Center. By all accounts this year’s event will expand to eight teams with four games at the Barclays Center featuring Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Penn State, and St. John’s.
So where is Longwood’s part in this event? Longwood will travel to Penn State and St. John’s in November as a part of the event. Monmouth and two other yet to be announced “lower division” teams will likely play Longwood in some sort of a round robin format at campus sites.
Penn State is coming off a 10-21 season and will be the first Big Ten the Lancers have taken on since a November 2007 visit to Indiana. St. John’s had a mark of 17-16 a year ago and actually lost to Big South school UNC Asheville a year ago. It is likely the game against the Red Storm will be played in the Queens based Carnesecca Arena.
We’ll keep you posted on any other schedule updates and you can follow it on our MESSAGE BOARD. Here are the other events Big South schools are currently committed to:
