Buddy Bolding Era Ends With Tourney Run

Coach Bolding will ride off into the sunset after 35 years of coaching Longwood baseball.

Longwood’s baseball season and the Buddy Bolding era officially came to a close today with a 8-6 loss to the number one seeded Campbell Camels in the Big South semifinals today. The Lancers end the year with a 26-28 record and a 14-14 mark in their first year of Big South Conference play. The tournament run and season in general was quite an accomplishment for long time coach Buddy Bolding and the Lancers after the Big South preseason poll overwhelmingly predicted LU to finish last in the conference.

Campbell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning today, but the Lancers continued to battle back. Longwood cut the lead to one in the 5th inning, but the Camels were able to get a little insurance with a three run seventh inning that sealed the deal.

Matt Dickason lead the team at the plate with a hit and two RBI, while Connor Gall added two hits and two runs. Joe Manion steadied the ship after  a rough start for Tyler Wislocki. Manion went four and one-third innings and only gave up one hit and two runs.

Campbell now moves on to the Big South championship where they will play either Coastal Carolina or host Liberty on Saturday.

Buddy Bolding will now ride off into the sunset after 35 years at the helm for the Lancers. His successor has not been named but Bolding has let it be known that he would like to see current pitching coach and Lancer alum Brian McCullough take over the program. Best of luck to coach Bolding and a big thank you for everything he has done for the program and the university!

Lancers Survive and Advance

Longwood baseball had their backs against the wall after a 6-1 loss to the second seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers yesterday, but the Lancers took care of business today bouncing division rival High Point from the Big South Tournament in Lynchburg. Longwood beat the Panthers for the third time this season today, winning 11-3.

The game was a bit back and forth until Longwood blew it open in the fourth inning scoring seven runs to go up 10-2. Leadoff hitter Colton Konvicka had a big day going five for six with four runs and two RBI. Matt Dickason added four hits and four RBI for the Lancers and Scott Burkett also homered.

Most importantly, the Lancers did not deplete their pitching staff in this tournament format. After a shaky start  Brandon Vick (6-5) steadied the ship to pitch a complete game while striking out six Panthers.

Longwood’s season will continue Thursday at 3PM when they will take on the sixth seed Gardner-Webb. LU swept the Bulldogs last month in Farmville.

Alex Owens Named to Big South 1st Team

Longwood third baseman Alex Owens has been named to the All-Big South First Team. The junior captain batted .286 with 4 home runs, a triple, 18 doubles, 31 RBI, 28 runs and 28 walks in the Lancers first year of conference play at the Division-I level. Owns tied Campbell third basemen Elijah Trail for the first team all-conference spot.

Lancers pitcher Brandon Vick was named to the All-Academic Team.

Longwood Baseball Set For Big South Tournament

In the Big South preseason poll Longwood amassed less voting points than any other team in the conference, squarely putting the Lancers predicted as twelfth (or last) place in the Big South. After a 12-12 finish in conference, Buddy Bolding’s squad have found themselves as the seventh seed for the Big South Tournament in Lynchburg this week.

Longwood has drawn perennial Big South power Coastal Carolina for their first tournament game on Tuesday at 9:30 am. The Chanticleers are seeded second in the tournament after a 35-19 season and a 18-6 finish in conference. Coastal has won 14 Big South titles including the last six championships. Longwood did not play the Chanticleers this year due to the RPI based schedule. The Lancers and Chants have never played against each other.

Campbell grabbed the one seed for this double-elimination tournament. Here is the complete schedule for all the games in Lynchburg:

Lancers Softball Headed to Big South Title Game

Longwood will make their first appearance on ESPNU during the Big South Championship.

Softball will be the second team to appear for Longwood in a Big South title game this year as the Lancers took down Campbell  twice today. Longwood was facing elimination both games, while Campbell just needed one win to advance.

Longwood dominated the first game with a 5-1 victory and then squeaked out a back and forth affair in game two 8-6. Emily Murphy went three for three in game two with all three hits being home runs. Megan Baltzell, who leads the NCAA in home runs, dropped her twenty ninth and thirtieth home runs of the year today. Libby Morris was the star on the hill for LU, leading the Lancers to four straight wins in the last two games.

Longwood will appear on ESPNU for the first time ever tomorrow (May 12) at noon.  The Lancers will take on the winner of Coastal Carolina and Winthrop this evening.

BASEBALL: Longwood baseball locked up a spot in the Big South tournament today with a 9-7 win at Presbyterian. The Lancers were picked to finish last in the conference in the Big South preseason poll.

Big South Baseball Tournament Outlook

The Big South tournament will be held at Liberty’s new stadium.

The Big South baseball tournament will feature the top eight teams in the conference with the division winners taking the number one and number two seed. This year’s tournament will be held on Liberty’s campus. The championship is double-elimination, with a one game championship. Here is how the conference is currently shaping up:

Lancers Weekly Round-Up: April 22

Baseball (20-21, 10-8): It was a big week on the diamond for the Lancers as they celebrated Buddy Bolding’s career over the weekend. Longwood lost to JMU in an extra innings tilt early in the week but rebounded with a huge Big South sweep over Gardner-Webb. The sweep now ranks Longwood fifth in the conference, for a tournament that just takes the best eight teams. Longwood now has a strange scheduling quirk where they may not play for over a week before taking on a very tough Radford team.
Last Week: L 6-4 vs JMU (10 Innings), W 2-1, W 6-5, W 6-2 vs Gardner Webb
This Week: 4/23 at George Mason

Softball (33-14, 13-5): Although the week ended in a sweep at the hands of the nation’s third ranked team, Florida, it was a productive week on the diamond for Longwood. First, Kathy Riley’s squad got a little revenge sweeping a doubleheader at Liberty and later sweeping ACC member Virginia Tech on the road. Longwood currently ranks third in the Big South and will close out the season with two Big South series against Presbyterian and Campbell before the conference tournament.
Last Week: W 14-6, W 9-2 at Liberty, W 6-5, W 5-4 at Virginia Tech, L 5-1, L 9-5, L 8-0 at #3 Florida

Lacrosse (10-7, 5-2): After a mid-week loss to American, the lacrosse team bounced back taking down Liberty 19-12 in their regular season finale. The Lancers locked up the three seed for the Big South tournament and will played the second seeded High Point Panthers on Friday on Davidson’s campus. Longwood lost 13-8 at High Point early on in the season. First year head coach Elaine Jones took the Lancers from a 4-13 record a year ago to one of the best teams in the conference in 2013!Last Week: L 7-6 at American, W 19-12 vs Liberty
This Week: vs #2 High Point (Big South Semifinals)

Women’s Golf: Longwood finished third in the Big South tournament lead by senior Ariel Witmer. Witmer shot a final day 69 to finish second overall in the tournament and made the All-Tournament Team.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis: Women’s tennis defeated the #8 seed Gardner-Webb in the Big South tournament but was then blanked by #1 Winthrop. The men lost 4-0 to #8 Asheville.

Lancers Weekly Round Up: April 14

Baseball (17-20,7-8): Despite losing three out of four this week, Longwood had a solid week taking Virginia Tech to extra innings (the Hokies were ranked #22 in the country a week ago) and beating the first Top 25 opponent in program history, Campbell, on Friday night on ESPN3. The Lancers are barely hanging on to a tournament spot and next weekend’s series against Gardner-Webb is HUGE for the team’s hopes.
Last Week: @ Virginia Tech L 7-5 (10), @ Campbell W 3-2, L 1-0, L 4-1
This Week: 4/17 vs James Madison, 4/19-21 vs Garnder-Webb (3 Game Series)

Softball (29-11,11-5): After a disappointing home loss to Liberty that snapped Longwood’s 8 game win streak, Kathy Riley’s squad rebounded by sweeping Radford. The Lancers will look to get some revenge on Liberty this week before heading to Gainesville to take on nation’s third ranked team Florida.
Last Week: vs Liberty L 8-7, @ Radford W 9-5, W 12-3
This Week: 4/15 at Liberty (DH), 4/20-21 at #3 Florida (3 Game Series)

Lacrosse (9-6,4-2): After a loss to Virginia Tech, the Lancers rebounded to pummel Presbyterian on the road. LU now finishes their regular season this week with a out-of-conference game against American and then a pivotal match up against Liberty for seeding.
Last Week: L 14-8 at Virginia Tech, W 21-8 at Presbyterian
This Week: 4/17 at American, 4/20 vs Liberty

Men’s Tennis: (5-14,0-8): The men’s squad went zero for four last week losing to Radford, Richmond, George Washington, and something called ASA Junior College. The team embarks on the Big South Tournament this week at Winthrop.

Women’s Tennis (6-13,1-8): The women’s squad had a successful week grabbing two wins, including the Tennis program’s first Big South win over Presbyterian. The women also head to the Big South championship this week, which is also being held at Winthrop.
