Both Longwood’s baseball and softball squads will get a shot at Big South foes on the road this weekend. Kathy Riley’s squad travels to North Charleston to take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, where they will also face off against the Ohio Bobcats. In regards to baseball, Buddy Bolding’s squad will take a short trip down to Buies Creek, North Carolina to take on the Campbell Camels for a three game set.
The trip for both teams should be a a good barometer for where we stand in the Big South, although there are rumors that baseball will not immediately be admitted into the Big South because Coastal Carolina wants to protect their RPI for seeding purposes in the NCAA Tournament. Perhaps a good series in Buies Creek could change Coastal’s minds, as well as the Big South as they cater to Coastal’s every need to keep them from jumping ship to the Colonial Athletic Association or the Southern Conference. The Camels are 15-3 this year including thirteen wins at home and are on a ten game winning streak. The Lancers had a rough weekend losing three of four to Niagara, but bounced back for a Wednesday matinee win over CAA member George Mason.
Kathy Riley’s squad is having a great year with a relatively youth infused team, the Lancers have a 15-8 mark so far and have a serious chance to sweep the Bucs who are 11-11 at this point.
